STATEMENT
My practice is defined as conceptual and research-based and consists of several strands.
Combining serious issues with humour and playfulness materials are transformed into simple, quirky, often multi-sensory sculptures and installations. Some works are used as site-specific interventions, ranging from subtle experiences to the more extreme intrusion of public spaces (areas).
One area of practice explores the behaviour and effect of sound, examining how it penetrates, modifies, expands and enhances our perception as it permeates space.
A main part of my practice engages and confronts socio-political and cultural issues with recent installations made in response to my views on the futility of war, currently relating to the soldiers killed in Afghanistan. I have incorporated aspects from an ongoing area of practice which examines the visible boundaries set by Man – which are ultimately illusory.
This continues my work on flags, where I challenge and question Man’s needs to identify too closely with his culture and heritage (and the problem this creates between nations.)
The sub-text of control and element of surprise remains an ongoing obsession: included within this area is my persistent involvement with secrecy and codes.
My work can be summed up as:
The Bird that flies in the night is a secret bird.............................full of deception.[i]
